Prime Video and Crystal Dynamics have announced a Tomb Raider live-action series, and a very well-respected writer is on board to both write and executive produce the project.

Per an announcement on the official Tomb Raider website, the series will boast the involvement of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whose work you might recognize from TV shows like Fleabag and movies like No Time to Die.

The series will premiere exclusively on Prime Video, although we don't have an air date or even a tentative cast list for it yet, so it might be a while before we hear anything more about it.

A TV series based on Tomb Raider is coming.

Waller-Bridge says Tomb Raider is "a huge part of [her] life", and that if she could tell her teenage self she was working on a live-action Tomb Raider series, she'd "explode".

It's not clear whether Waller-Bridge intends to hew closer to the darker, more realistic tone of Crystal Dynamics' reboot series or to the more swashbuckling and humorous tone struck by the original games (recently revived thanks to Aspyr-led remasters).

Given Phoebe Waller-Bridge's comments about her "teenage self", though, as well as her promise to make a "bats 'n all" series, it sounds like we might be moving slightly away from the tone of the 2013 reboot and the Alicia Vikander-starring 2018 movie.

Of course, this is all just speculation; no cast or story setup has been revealed yet, so we'll have to wait a while before we learn exactly what kind of Lara we're getting in this series.

Will Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Tomb Raider series be closer to the originals or the newer games in tone?

The new series is part of an effort to "develop additional Tomb Raider stories in streaming and film", according to the announcement, but don't worry; games aren't being left behind.

A new Tomb Raider game is in the works at Crystal Dynamics, with Amazon providing "full support" as well as publishing the game around the world.

In the announcement for the new series, Amazon reiterates that the game is still in development, describing it as a "single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure" and the "next chapter to Lara Croft's legendary explorations".

Stay tuned for more news on that, as well as the live-action series and all other things Tomb Raider.
