Our Winter Survival Cooking and Food Guide will go over how to sustain yourself in the snowy wilderness, including some tips on getting the most out of your food.

It's worth noting that, depending on your start in Endless Mode, you'll sometimes have access to food already. Some food resources may also be more abundant than other depending on the mode and area you're in.

How to Get Food

There are a few sources of food in Winter Survival, each having their own upsides.

For starters, sometimes you'll just find canned food and drink. This will mostly be in ruined buildings and other man-made structures. While edible cold, tinned goods are even better when cooked.

Berries and mushrooms can also be gathered from bushes, the ground, and tree trunks. While some mushrooms can be poisonous, many are perfectly safe are are good at dealing with hunger early on.

Finally, there are animals and their produce. While you wont be able to hunt animals early on (especially in Endless Mode), their meat offers massive benefits when cooked.

All food has a freshness level, which decreases over time. Once empty, the food will spoil. This lowers its usefulness and sometimes gives a chance of negative status effects.

Cooking Food

Depending on the ingredients and whether you've unlocked the recipe, it's possible to cook food at fires. This food usually offers greater or different benefits from the raw ingredients.

Recipes in Story Mode are unlocked via quest progression, while Endless Mode has you unlock most of them via increasing your Adaption Level.

Food that is cooked will burn if left by the fire for too long. Some will also cool over time, reverting it back to the previous state (e.g. Warmed Marko's Beans will eventually turn back to just Marko's Beans if left long enough).
