A shot of space repair sim Tin Can

During today's AG French Direct showcase, we got to see some gameplay for upcoming space repair sim Tin Can. It looks suitably frenetic, so fans of games like Spaceteam should get their fill of cosmic chaos from this one.

What exactly is Tin Can?

"In space, tech support can't hear you scream". So goes the slogan for aptly-named developer Tin Can Studio's Tin Can. You've managed to flee an exploding spaceship, but now you're stuck in an ancient escape pod with no knowledge whatsoever of how it works. Naturally, it's not too long before things start going wrong, so it's up to you to navigate the arcane systems of the escape pod and - hopefully - survive.

Some components in Tin Can
Just some of the components you'll be getting to grips with in Tin Can.

To help you get to grips with Tin Can's myriad systems, you'll have access to instruction manuals, but naturally, they're completely incomprehensible. It's up to you not only to grapple with the systems, but also to decipher the dense, jargon-filled instructions to help you better understand how to survive. Of course, you'll also have to contend with various external threats; space is far from immobile, so you'll need to navigate asteroid fields, nebulas, and other cosmic bodies if you want to escape from your situation unscathed.

Tin Can Studio is promising around 20 different components to tinker with in Tin Can. Medical symptoms won't present themselves in terms of health bars and other video game staples; if you get hypoxia, for example, you'll start to breathe more quickly and heavily, and other ailments will manifest as they would in real life, too. If you like to micro-manage systems and have a talent for multi-tasking, it looks like Tin Can will be one to watch.

You'll be able to get your hands on Tin Can when it launches via Steam Early Access sometime this year. We don't yet have a concrete release date for the game, so watch this space.
