Paradox Interactive has announced a Prison Architect 2 delay, with the release date moving from May to September.

Prison Architect 2 was originally announced in January after being teased as part of the reveal for the first game's final major update. When the sequel was revealed, it had a release date of March 26th.

That date was subsequently pushed back to May 7th, and now, in a new post on its official website, Paradox has announced a new Prison Architect 2 release date: September 3rd.

Prison Architect 2 is going to take a little more time, Paradox has announced.

In the post, Paradox goes into quite some detail regarding the reason for this Prison Architect 2 delay, and it's all to do with technical issues regarding minimum-spec machines.

The publisher says that it has builds "certified on all platforms" and that the game is technically ready for release, but that "some issues regarding memory usage and minimum-spec configurations" have arisen.

As a result, the devs retooled the game to run better on low-spec machines, but this has resulted in a number of new technical issues springing up, and so those issues now have to be fixed.

Given that most publishers would have settled for a simple "we need more time to ensure the game is of sufficient quality", it's nice to get an insight into what a statement like that actually means, even if it does mean Prison Architect 2 won't be along for a while longer.

As you've probably guessed, Prison Architect 2 is the sequel to Prison Architect. It transposes the management sim gameplay of the first title into full 3D, allowing for innovations like multi-level prisons.

The sequel will also offer "tons of snazzy new tools" for building and maintaining your prison, and it'll also feature improved inmate and guard AI, an upgraded Career Mode, and more.

Prison Architect launches for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 3rd.
